2019-2021 CHHC Module: Social and Technological Change in Historical Perspective

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), through its Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens (The Huntington) recently announced the research focus of the next two-year module of the Caltech-Huntington Humanities Collaborations (CHHC). Titled “Social and Technological Change in Historical Perspective,” the module will bring together scholars from a range of disciplines to explore the ways in which new technologies since the Industrial Revolution have addressed social challenges and the ways in which such challenges and associated technologies have been understood and accommodated in specific social contexts.

The module is being organized by Caltech’s Kevin Gilmartin (William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of English; Dean of Undergraduate Students) and Tracy Dennison (Professor of Social Science History), who will set the research agenda and lead the search for key members of their team, including a postdoctoral instructor and long-term research fellows, who will collaborate with scholars from Caltech and The Huntington. The module’s activities will get under way in 2019, with events expected to begin next fall. Learn more about the research program here. The CHHC is supported by Caltech’s Anne Rothenberg Fund for the Humanities.
